Purpose and Mission
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading and coordinating maintenance activities to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of plant, equipment, and facilities. The role involves supervising maintenance technicians, planning preventative maintenance activities, responding to breakdowns, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to maximise equipment availability and productivity.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with UK Health & Safety legislation and company procedures.
- Promote safe working practices and ensure risk assessments and permits to work are followed.
- Investigate maintenance-related incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure statutory inspections and compliance requirements are completed and documented.
- Maintain adherence to ISO standards and company quality procedures where applicable
Maintenance Management
- Supervise and coordinate day-to-day maintenance activities across the site.
- Ensure planed preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules are completed effectively and on time.
- Coordinate reactive maintenance and breakdown repairs to minimise downtime.
- Prioritise maintenance activities based on operational requirements and business needs.
- Monitor equipment performance and implement improvement actions to increase reliability
Team Leadership
- Lead, motivate and develop a team of maintenance engineers and technicians.
- Allocate work and resources effectively to ensure maintenance targets are achieved.
- Conduct performance reviews, coaching, training and development activities.
- Support recruitment, onboarding and succession planning within the maintenance team.
- Foster a positive safety culture and strong team engagement.
Planning & Continuous Improvement
- Support the development and implementation of maintenance strategies.
- Analyse downtime data and identify opportunities for equipment reliability improvements.
- Drive continuous improvement projects focused on safety, efficiency and cost reduction.
- Assist with capital projects, equipment installations and commissioning activities.
- Work closely with production and operations teams to improve plant performance.
Maintenance Systems & Reporting
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Manage maintenance KPIs including downtime, MTBF, MTTR and completion of preventative maintenance tasks.
- Monitor spare parts usage and inventory levels.
- Prepare maintenance reports and provide updates to management.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Experience in a maintenance supervisory or senior engineering role within a manufacturing, industrial, FMCG, logistics, or processing environment.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Proven experience leading and managing maintenance teams.
- Experience with preventative and reactive maintenance programmes.
- Understanding of health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
- Competent in the use of CMMS systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
Desirable
- Experience within a lean manufacturing or continuous improvement environment.
- Knowledge of TPM, RCA, Six Sigma or Lean methodologies.
- IOSH Managing Safely qualification.
- Experience managing maintenance budgets and contractors.
- Project management experience.
Qualifications
Essential
- Time-served engineering apprenticeship or equivalent.
- Level 3 qualification in Mechanical, Electrical or Multi-Skilled Engineering.
Desirable
- HNC/HND in Engineering or related discipline.
- IOSH Managing Safely.
- NEBOSH Certificate.
- Leadership or supervisory qualification.
