Purpose and Mission
As Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Manager, you will be responsible for leading and embedding effective SHE management across the site. The role provides both strategic and operational leadership to ensure legal compliance, continuous improvement in safety performance, and the promotion of a positive safety culture.
You will act as the principal subject-matter expert for Safety, Health and Environmental matters, providing professional guidance to leaders and employees, overseeing governance and reporting requirements, managing external relationships, and driving proactive risk management to protect people, the environment, and the business. The role holds site-level accountability for legal and regulatory compliance and has authority to challenge unsafe practices where necessary.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
Lead & Influence
- Own the site’s SHE strategy, ensuring compliance with UK legislation and company standards.
- Act as the site’s primary contact for regulators, auditors, and external bodies.
- Provide expert guidance to leaders and teams, influencing safe working behaviours at all levels.
Governance & Performance
- Develop and present SHE reports, dashboards, KPIs and insights to senior leadership.
- Analyse SHE data to identify trends, risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain and enhance ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 aligned management systems.
Operational Excellence
- Lead audits, inspections, and incident investigations using root cause analysis.
- Oversee risk assessments including task‑based, COSHH and environmental.
- Manage contractor SHE performance, induction, and compliance requirements.
Environment & Wellbeing
- Coordinate environmental compliance activities, including waste, permits and reporting.
- Support wellbeing initiatives and occupational health programmes.
- Ensure robust emergency response plans, drills and site preparedness.
Culture & Engagement
- Champion proactive safety behaviours through engagement, coaching and visible leadership.
- Manage safety observation systems, ensuring timely and effective action closure.
- Uphold confidentiality, integrity and a consistent, professional SHE presence on site.

Previous Experience
Essential Experience
- Proven experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment, with a solid understanding of operational SHE risks.
- Practical involvement in risk assessments, including task‑based, COSHH and environmental.
- Demonstrated experience leading or supporting incident and near‑miss investigations, using root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
- Involvement in site audits, inspections and SHE compliance activities, ideally in line with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
- Experience influencing safe behaviours and embedding SHE standards across mixed teams—shop‑floor to leadership.
- Strong exposure to developing or maintaining SHE management systems and ensuring documentation accuracy.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience working as a SHE Manager or senior SHE professional within a site‑based environment.
- Experience engaging with regulators, enforcement bodies, auditors or external consultants.
- Experience managing contractors and external service providers, including competency checks, inductions and on‑site performance monitoring.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement or Lean methodologies applied to SHE performance.
- Experience presenting SHE performance, metrics or improvement plans to senior leadership or external stakeholders.
Qualifications and Education
Essential
- NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards with commitment to complete).
- Strong working knowledge of UK H&S and environmental legislation.
- Experience in manufacturing or industrial environments.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 / ISO 14001.
- Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office).
Desirable
- Lean / Continuous Improvement knowledge.
- Advanced Excel/PowerPoint skills.
- Experience in senior/site‑level SHE leadership.
- Exposure to regulatory inspections.
