About the role

Your Impact as Safety Coordinator – Rome, GA

Develop and maintain company safety policies and programs, identify, and resolve safety issues, and manage WorkSafeBC claims and return to work programs for approximately 130 employees. Advise, assist, and provide technical expertise to management and plant personnel on all matters of employee and workplace safety.

This role will report to the Plant Manager.

 

Your Essential Job Functions

  • Develop a safe workplace
    • Develop and maintain safety policies and programs, in conformance with legislative requirements and corporate policy.
    • Reduce or eliminate safety issues through monitoring of work practices and recommending workstation modifications.
    • Communicate policies and programs to employees and management and demonstrate them in day-today activities.
    • Assess current safety practices and recommend, coordinate, and assist in the development of effective corrective response actions.
    • Respond to employee safety concerns and take corrective action to solve the problem.
    • Seek to understand plant operations and machine specifications by frequenting the shop floor and speaking with and observing employees.
    • Conduct regular performance audits to ensure all safety programs are being followed.
    • Conduct safety committee meetings once a month and ensure follow through of suggestions through daily and monthly safety spotlights. 
  • Manage first aid, accident investigations, safety incident reports and WorkSafe BC Claims
    • Conduct accident investigations and train supervisors to conduct them during non-business hours.
    • Ensure compliance with WorkSafe BC (WCB) regulations, including timely reporting of incidents.
    • Manage the claims process, ensuring appropriate information is provided, regular follow ups with the employee are completed and return to work is expedited.
    • Assist with programs to minimize the number of Safety Incident Reports (SIRs) and Lost-Time Accidents (LTAs), including their related expenses, while contesting claims as appropriate. 
  • Coordinate and manage orientations and safety training
    • Responsible for organization of all outside safety related training programs such as first aid, CPR and mobile equipment and communicating any employee absences to supervisors.
    • Deliver in-house training for safety related programs such as ergonomics, fire inspections and lockout and monitor their effectiveness.
    • Provide orientations to new hires, ensuring the orientation package is followed and completed, including the plant tour.
    • Maintain training records for each employee, ensuring all training certifications are filed and up-to-date according to ISO standard.
  • Maintain first aid facilities and safety supplies
    • Monitor stock levels in the first aid room and place shopping carts for supplies in SAP. 
    • Place orders for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety related equipment in SAP
  • Maintain employee safety awareness initiatives and award and incentive programs
    • Post the number of LTAs and SIRs daily.
    • Update safety bulletin boards in the plant and front office areas.
    • Suggest new incentive and award programs and maintain current program, ensuring all employees receive their rewards on a timely basis.
  • Safety.
    • Sets the example in safety and ensures others abide by BCL Occupational Health and Safety Policies.
    • Ensures good housekeeping of work areas including offices/desks.
    • Actively participate in safety initiatives and brings safety concerns to the attention of appropriate authorities
  • Other duties as assigned
    • Assist HR Manager and HR/Production Clerk with special project or events.
    • The duties and responsibilities outlined above are representative of the position, however, they may not be all-inclusive and other duties may be required.

 

About You

Essential skills & competencies

  • Extensive knowledge and use of Microsoft Office tools is required. Knowledge of SAP is an asset.
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent and a Safety Coordinator Diploma, Safety Specialist Certification, or post-secondary education in the field of Human Resources.
  • A minimum of 1-year previous experience as a Safety Specialist/Coordinator within a manufacturing environment is required.
  • Must have knowledge of WCB Industrial Health and Safety regulations.
  • Must have level 3 Occupational First Aid Certification.
  • Must have knowledge in the use of indoor air quality equipment.
  • Must be able to exhibit a high level of confidentiality, acting with professionalism and integrity.
  • Must have flexibility and be able to work hours between 7:00am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday.
  • May be required for specials projects to be available for overtime to cover other employees or during busy periods.
