Bridon-Bekaert The Ropes Group are looking for a Safety, Health and Environmental Manager to join our Newcastle team. The role will require travel as you will be looking after sites in Newcastle and Coatbridge, Scotland.


The purpose of the role is to provide robust functional Safety, Health & Environmental leadership and to support achievement of site SH&E KPI’s with a strong focus on continuous improvement.  The SH &E Manager will ensure appropriate arrangements for the effective planning, governance, organization, control, monitoring, review and maintenance of the preventive and protective measures in place. The role requires a multi cross- functional approach to ensure compliance with the Bridon-Bekaert legislative operating standards and policies, and related Health and Safety requirements within the facility.  The primary focus of the role is the two Newcastle sites (at Willington and Neptune Quays) with additional responsibility for the Company’s operations in Scotland.


Principal accountabilities shall include but not be limited to:

  • Be the onsite champion for SH&E issues and the creation and maintenance of a no harm well-being and sustainable future culture
  • Provide guidance to management on the promotion and implementation of SH&E targets and improvements and the resourcing for agreed activities and these objectives
  • Manage SH&E data and KPI’s in the Enablon system and ensure that these are communicated, updated and reviewed in an accurate and timely manner
  • Develop a robust and effective continuous improvement strategy for SHE, in line with the Bekaert strategy and in partnership with the management team and key business stakeholders
  • Monitor and facilitate compliance to legal and Bekaert requirements and address non-compliance issues with the Site Management. 
  • Develop programmes to reduce SH&E hazards and risks
  • Ensure that SH&E records and reports are completed in a timely manner, communicated as required, maintained and updated as and when necessary and are available for inspection 
  • Ensure proper reporting of SH& E issues to local authorities
  • Monitor resource needs to carry out the SH & E policy
  • Ensure that regular SH&E inspections (including gemba walks) are carried out and participate in these activities on a regular basis
  • Ensure the participation and involvement of all team members in SH&E issues is actively encouraged and ensure all complaints and /or breaches are brought to the attention of line management
  • Where necessary, liaise and consult with relevant external authorities and organisations
  • Liaise with customers with respect to SH & E performance and the continuous improvement of the SH& E management of Bekaert
  • Assist the Site Operations Manager with the scheduling and organization of the site SH & E committee meetings and minute taking 
  • Ensure all accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded, reported and investigated in accordance with the Company incident handling procedures and that all corrective actions are identified, implemented and reviewed
  • Continually improve existing SH&E programmes, processes and systems
  • Maintain professional competence and act as a SH&E role model
  • Liaise with, and advise procurement on any applicable SH&E standards for purchasing goods and services
  • Ensure site personnel are provided with adequate safety training and that this is recorded and refreshed appropriately. 
  • Write and develop SHE related Toolbox Talks and procedures/policies as and when the need is identified
  • Support the other functions within the business in relation to their standard operating procedures ensuring they adequately address SHE related factors
  • Liaise with the HR function in respect of Occupational Health surveillance and other activities
  • Liaise with Company insurers and legal representatives in respect of litigation and other issues as they arise



Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Holds minimum of NEBOSH General Certificate and good working knowledge of manufacturing SH&E issues and solutions
  • Ideally, NEBOSH full diploma

  • Good working knowledge of MS applications and Share point databases
